THE PROJECT | O PROJETO

EN Between 2023 and 2025, WMF Martins Fontes published five new titles by the celebrated author and Black feminist thinker bell hooks for Brazilian readers. Featuring previously unpublished texts and interviews with figures such as Stuart Hall, Amalia Mesa-Bains, and Cornel West, the collection expands hooks’ reflections by bridging Black American culture with themes like feminism, latinidad, education, music, culture, and politics. Developed at Estúdio Tereza Bettinardi, where I worked from 2021 to 2023, the project allowed me to design this series — a body of work that connects hooks’ legacy with new audiences through design and visual storytelling. 

 

PT A editora WMF Martins Fontes lançou, entre os anos de 2023 e 2025, cinco novos títulos da célebre autora e pensadora do movimento negro bell hooks ao público brasileiro. Entre textos inéditos e entrevistas com pensadores como Stuart Hall, Amalia Mesa-Bains e Cornel West, a coleção expande os pensamentos da autora, interseccionando o diálogo da cultura negra dos Estados Unidos com temas como o feminismo, latinidade, educação, música, cultura e política. O estúdio Tereza Bettinardi, onde trabalhei entre 2021 e 2023, foi convidado à desenvolver o projeto e tive a oportunidade de desenvolver essa série lá.

HOW I DID | COMO CRIEI

EN From the very beginning, the importance of translating bell hooks’ intersecting themes and visions into a visual language became the guiding thread of the project. Bringing new Black voices into conversation with hooks’ work shaped the entire process. I had the opportunity to invite two Brazilian Black artists — Kika de Carvalho (Irmãs de Inhame and Funk Sem Cortes) and Mulambö (Teaching to Transgress, Homegrown, and Breaking Bread) — to illustrate the book covers with their artworks, adding another layer of interpretation to hooks’ legacy.

 

Alongside them, the choice of Ruben, a typeface developed by Tré Seals and inspired by the Chicano protest posters against the Vietnam War in 1970, was essential in grounding the project and amplifying titles, chapter numbers, and highlights. The covers, printed on the reverse side of the cardstock, reveal a tactile surface and an unexpected shine when fully opened.

 

Concise and direct, the graphic design centers the text and its discussions, emphasizing the dialogue between the authors. In the end, the collection reflects diversity and uses design as a tool to create a space for voice, dialogue, and shared reflection — one that feels both comfortable and powerful.

 

PT Desde o começo, a importância de levar a intersecção dos temas e visões propostas por bell hooks de forma visual se tornou um guia na construção do projeto. Agregar novas vozes negras ao trabalho de bell hooks conduziu o projeto. Tive a oportunidade de convidar dois artistas negros brasileiros, Kika de Carvalho (Irmãs de Inhame e Funk Sem Cortes) e Mulambö (Ensinando a Transgredir, Cultivado em Casa e Partindo o Pão), para ilustrarem as capas dos livros com seus trabalhos, acrescentando mais uma camada de interpretação ao trabalho de hooks.

Junto a eles, a escolha de Ruben, tipografia desenvolvida por Tré Seals a partir dos cartazes de protesto chicanos contra a Guerra do Vietnã em 1970, foi essencial para amarrar o projeto e potencializar títulos, numeração de capítulos e destaques.

 

As capas, impressas no verso do papel cartão, adicionam textura e um brilho inesperado ao abri-las por completo, em seu verso. O projeto gráfico, conciso e direto, evidencia o texto e as discussões ali presentes, valorizando o diálogo entre os autores. No fim, temos uma coleção diversa, onde o design é utilizado como ferramenta para garantir um local de fala e diálogo confortável, direto e eficaz.
